Shineclan of the Gleaming Underground

Post by Mew-Chan on Tue Feb 25, 2014 10:49 pm

A moon has passed since the night which bore many tragedies showed its yellow, full face.
Tensions have greatly risen between Featherclan and Emberclan since the discovery of Glowpaw's body in Featherclan's territory, and thus it is believed that a cold war is fast approaching. Despite how Featherclan denied any knowledge on the reasons for the dead apprentice and even offered that Muddyleaf, who had been caught on Featherclan's territory as well, might have been the suspect, Emberclan remains sternly set on blaming those of the forest.

Not too long after the death of Glowpaw came Clashfang of Featherclan. Though no clear scents were upon his form, Featherclan greatly believed that it was an attempt of revenge from Emberclan, despite how the fiery clan denied even knowing about the warrior's death. Within the current time period, many skirmishes along borders have broken out and threats between rivaling clans further grow.

Yet, worst of them all has been Terraclan, the supposed main suspect of the mass killings prior as they had yet to lose a soul, has now been believed to be making a comeback. Due to the death of her younger brother, Flashstar has been quite grief-stricken and paranoid of all others around. Much to the point to where she believes that all the other clans are targeting the clan of the quarry. Because of the leader's extreme fear for her clanmates, none are allowed to leave the territory and all patrols have been limited to 5+ members per party. Along with this, the medicine cats have been restricted from going to the Moon Meadow for the typical sharing of tongues with Starclan. Most astonishing to the other four clans of Terraclan's sudden change in behavior was how they failed to attend the last Gathering, as they had become even more skittish and wary of the other four after the heated accusations towards the quarry clan during the Leaders' Meet; thus only four battles were fought during the Moon of the Mates and no new couples were made. Many are unsure whether Terraclan's latest actions are helping or hurting their cause.

However, all others aren't well either, as fear has stricken them hard. Only about half a moon ago, the body of Nightwing was found dead close to the back border of Berryclan's territory that reaches off to the farm. Although such allowed the thought that maybe the she-cat had wandered too close to a barn cat's territory to rise among the members, the idea that the murders from many moons past still weighs down heavily upon their thoughts. Without a leader to guide them, Berryclan has become quite melancholy- very similar to Shineclan- and many have believed Starclan has abandoned them for not naming a new leader, Yellowmoon being one of the strongest believers of such a theory.

Along with Berryclan, tragedy and fear have swept through the smallest clan as Shineclan has begun to suffer from an extreme food shortage as the cold seasons lurk closer. However, they are too fearful to seek assistance from their closest ally, Terraclan, to which all the clans have come to understand and respect why they are so timid- after all, they were the only clan to lose a leader during said former killings. And yet, rumors have begun to spread that they have turned to Berryclan, hoping to for an alliance with the larger clan so that they may support each other in the highly anticipated war rising. Another rumor, though much less mentioned and highly ludicrous, is the idea that they two may unite to create a super clan with the assistance the rogues who have been scented around the territories more often and supposedly have been thought to be in cahoots with the clan of flowers.

Even so, despite the pressures which all clans seem to be burdened with, nature has decided against easing up on the cats and resuming pushing full force upon them. Although it is only the middle of Leaffall, illness has already struck the clans strongly as Tinypelt, a new queen of Berryclan, was taken by the deadly Greencough and the rest of the clans are worried that such a sickness may soon spread...

Blinking his eyes as the pale light which shown through the few crevices and cracks in his den's ceiling lingered on the air, the long tom stretched out his lanky legs against his soft bedding and allowed his pink tongue to loll out with a deep yawn. Flickering his icy eyes of milky blue and amber to his limbs, the leader's brow furrowed slightly as he gave a small grunt. With his age quickly catching up- practically riding on his tail at this point- the tom's limbs were not as limber as they used to be. Paintedstar gave a sigh and pulled himself back up to a sitting position, cringing slightly at the faint pain which picked and pricked at his joints like nettle and briar, and swept his whip-like tail around his neatly perched paws. Each delicate appendage, despite the pained strain coursing through them, held the leader of Shineclan up well as he sat tall to himself. After a quick prayer to Starclan, Paintedstar rose and stepped out of his small den into the heart of the camp, the air glittering and glowing as the thin rays of light shining in from the slits of stone in the cavern ceiling cast their shines onto the gleaming crystals and jewels which lace the walls of the camp with such a radiant incandescence to ignite the camp grounds with a shimmering light of deep reds and violets. As his muscles began to become more active with every movement, Paintedstar's body started to loosen up and hurt less, to which he smiled to himself. I'm not that old yet. Chuckling, he smiled as as the sounds of his clan came to life, to which his perked ears greedily ate up. His gaze traveled to the main source of sound and he watched with great content.

Across the camp from the leader's den, four apprentices wrestled and played like kits near the Nursery- in fact, they were playing in such a way for the kits. The scruffy brown form of Scratchpaw pinned the sleek black tom that was Reedpaw, as Twopaw and Koipaw evaded the eldest apprentice's attacks. However, all three were smiling and laughing, and Scratchpaw raised his head to roar,"You see that, Applegrove?" His head tilted slightly to look at the queen who remained laying in her nest, smiling at him and his antics. "Whenever Mambakit and Wingkit get bigger, I'll make sure to teach them how to play right!" He chuckled as he met with the mossy gaze of Applegrove until he lost his grip on his denmate and Reedpaw wriggled free and kicked him down. Frowning in the ground, he looked and snapped in annoyance,"Hey, watch out!" But his eyes continued to gleam with playful amusement as he hopped up and ran at the three younger cats who playfully darted off further into the camp's center. Scratchpaw quickly caught Twopaw and landed on her form near the fresh kill pile.

"Oof!!" Twopaw puffed as her upper back and head met with the soft earth of the cavern's floor. Her green eyes rolled a bit center her jogged attention on Scratchpaw and the young she-cat blinked curiously as she noticed his look softening.

"I...I didn't hurt you, did I?" He asked with a bit of a nervous quiver to his voice.

"No no," the apprentice mewed out with a smiling giggled as she poked at his scarred nose. "You just surprised me." The two continued to wrestle, and before long, Reedpaw and Koipaw had joined the fray as well.

Paintedstar looked up to his right as he noticed the stoic-faced daughters of the former Snowstar padding towards him. Sweeping his tail along the ground, he made a spot for Oranceice to sit while Softfrost continued past to sit on his left side. Smiling, he returned his gaze to the playing apprentices and calmly mewed,"They've really taken to the clan and our way of living." However, his smile faltered slightly as he heard a soft huff emanate from his deputy. Looking over, his gaze locked on her icy stare.

Softfrost shrugged, breaking the stare to look over at the apprentice and meowed curtly,"Yes, but that makes three more hungry mouths to feed- three growing mouths. We were lucky that Applegrove's litter were so small and born so late, so they'll surely still be at suckling age by the time this prey shortage blows over. But even so, do you think this is the best idea for Shineclan?" Her calm face hardened slightly as she returned her look to Paintedstar and was caught be the somber expression he bore. With a sigh, she closed her eyes and rolled her shoulders,"I don't completely mean we just drop them off somewhere, but maybe we could send them to another clan. Like Berryclan- they're nice and should have plenty to eat."

"But they like it here. I'm not sending these kits away any time soon. Who knows what they've had to endure before meeting us? You even said it yourself that their hunting techniques were poor at best- practically nonexistent." His voice lower as he continued,"I'm not going to be the cat that welcomes them to a place safe and stable just to send them away a moon later, just as they're getting comfortable."

Softfrost merely sighed and stood up, shaking her feathery thick tail free of any dust which may cling to her lavish fur. "Very well. But as you show these former loners a kindness, you may be digging Shineclan its grave." The red-eyed deputy stalked off to the Warrior's den with a slight wobble in her step to gather cats for another patrol- most likely a hunting one. Such patrols were the ones sent most often these days, and even those few sent to mark the borders had a second objective and that was to catch anything they could....even if it were slightly across the border. The warriors who did it weren't exactly proud to do such, but when none of the other clans seem to notice and those back home who really depend on the prey don't know, the warriors must do what they can for their clanmates.

"She seems to forget that we already live in a grave." The gentle voice of Orangeice slid out softly as her sister disappeared, causing the leader's head to whip around and stare at her with wide eyes. However, the young medicine cat's orange gaze continued to rest on the center of the camp, not bothering to meet Paintedstar's sight. When she finally did, she gave a snort chuckle with faint smirk, adding quietly,"We live underground after all."

Paintedstar gave a forced chuckle as he made it seem he caught the calm cat of white's failed attempt at being humorous, but he had honestly been horrified that she had meant something different. As if she had seen something from Starclan. Such caused his mind to travel to Berryclan and he remembered what internal turmoil was churning the prairie clan from inside. Shaking his head, he silently wished his allies the best of luck and prayed that Starclan was watching over them, even if they don't believe in the starry warriors. Looking back up, he smiled as the apprentices broke apart from their fight and were licking down their wild fur. "No," he murmured softly to himself, earning a glance from Orangeice. "No, they're part of Shineclan and are my clanmates now."

Mousehawk had pulled himself from the Warrior's den, a slightly grogginess cause his legs to wobble a bit as he attempted to gain control of his sleepy limbs. He began walking towards the Nursery, but as he neared, the scent of prey washed over his scent glands. The golden eyes of the brightly colored cat moved to the fresh kill pile and he shook his head, sternly warning his inner hunger silently. I can't eat right now. Prey is scarce and others need it more than me. Hell- look at Softfrost, you pompous ass! She's gone about a week on a mouse's tail and without a wink of sleep! To shake away the feeling gnawing at his belly, he trotted over to where Scratchpaw, Reedpaw, Twopaw, and Koipaw were grooming themselves after what he assumed was another play match outside the Nursery. "So what have you all been up to?"

"Showing the kits how to fight."

Well that's that. Scratchpaw's eager mew had just enforced Mousehawk's guess with an answer. With a warm chuckle, he mused with a smile,"Ahh very nice. However, they were born only four days ago. I'm sure my kits really can't tell what you're all doing just yet."

Scratchpaw looked up and grinned widely. "Yeah, I figured. But even if they can't see of hear properly, their noses sure do work. They'll learn the musky scents of sweat, anxiety, and eagerness before anything else! And Applegrove even gets to see what we'll be teaching them once they're bigger."

So that's it... Mousehawk studied the close-eyed tom carefully and sighed. He was positively sure that one of the newest apprentices was attached to his mate- she had been the first to fully open up to them and become their friend while she was still fat with her kits. Some might even think Scratchpaw had certain feelings for the pretty, young queen if they weren't aware of his nearly undying adoration for Twopaw. That something that Mousehawk knew already, and even so, he didn't mind it if the apprentice loved his mate. Mousehawk knew that she has feelings somewhat for Scratchpaw, and he is semi-sure that once his secret comes out into the open, they'll have a chance of becoming mates. But that doesn't mean he and Applegrove don't love each other- they just aren't in love with one another.

Waving his tail, he purred,"Well, I'll be on my way then. Gonna go say hi to the kits and Applegrove before I go hunting. Thanks for keeping them company while I've been gone." Its true he hasn't been around much- all the warriors pretty much have been either in their nest sleeping, out hunting, or training the apprentices. Even Mousehawk himself had to trained and entire class himself while the majority of the mentors were either already out hunting or too tuckered out to move. Even so, its what had to be done and as a mentor whose apprentice had just become a warrior within the past few weeks, he could say that he was completely grateful for Paintedstar's fantastic mood towards mentoring young cats, as the leader more often than not was too slow and sore to hunt effectively. Thus, he was always around to teach the young warrior apprentices- chances are that today, he'll be training them on fighting since the last couple of days consisted of proper hunting techniques and stalking. With a twitch of his tail to the farewells from the apprentices, he disappeared into the Nursery.

(Yay, They're open :3)

Moonclaw groaned, as he slowly got out of his nest with a large yawn. Having been out all night to try and catch some prey for the clan, he was shattered. He slowly stumbled out of the warrior den and stretched out before beginning to clean himself up- getting rid of the dried mud that splattered his paws and underbelly and getting rid of the scraps of moss and leaves that had stuck to him during the night.

He looked around, seeing who was awake and what everyone else was doing. Finishing his wash and Feeling a little better, He got up went over to Paintedstar, Softfrost and Orangeice. Nodding respectfully to them all he mewed, "What am I meant to be doing today?"- His question mainly directed to the leader and deputy rather than the medicine cat.

Young Sunwatcher had been up above ground. Not many in his clan had honestly gone up above their tunnels. After all, one wrong move and a cat could bring tunnels crashing down. However after many moons of moving above them, Sunwatcher knew exactly how to move so that he did not bring the tunnels down. Not to mention, during his free time, he would go and support the tunnels with sticks. His clan often wondered why he stpported them, but he never answered. It was just something that Snowstar had always taught him. The former leader had been his mentor and she was the one who taught him to maneuver above ground. She had learned of his love of birds and she ran with it. Literally. Because of Snowstar, Sunwatcher could go above ground and catch birds for the clan. When prey was scarce in the tunnels, Sunwatcher aways had a bird to bring back. If not two. In Greenleaf and newleaf he could bring back multiple birds. Today they young golden cat had brought two birds home. Migration had started so not many would be coming around these parts except for geese. Geese were large but Sunwatcher could take down one... They were hard to get simply because they traveled in large groups and they did not hesitate to attack anything. This time Sunwatcher had two cardinals. He padded into camp and gently placed his kills in the tiny freshkill pile. There was hardly anything there and it was utterly depressing.

Shellpaw, Like every morning, found herself waking up happily and racing over to Paintedstar. Like every morning, she leaped up onto his back and scrambled up to the top of his head. Over the past moon and a half, the apprentice had grown... slightly. Now she could step into larger nests without having to get a running jump. She was still the size of a kit, but she was getting bigger, Starclan be praised for that. "Morning Paintedstar!" Shellpaw mewed out happily. The tiny little calico placed her little paws on his large head and happily licked it. Her chipper attitude was always present and it was quite adorable.

Briarnight woke, exhausted as usual, in the warriors den. She stretched, and yawned a bit. Padding out, she looked around camp before getting a piece of prey. Something felt odd to her, like she was a bit heavier then normal. But she ignored it for the time being. Good morning Bloodbriar! Ready to be annoying yet again? Why of course Briarnight, why wouldn't i?

Why, good morning! Shellpaw, have you eaten recently? Sunwatcher has just brought in some fresh birds!" The tall leader had given a slight groan from the sudden weight on his neck, but quickly recovered as he adjusted to the apprentice's typical perching position. Paintedstar used the term 'recently' as he was sure that only those who hadn't eaten for a few days had breakfast this morning. If memory served, he and the tiny calico had shared a small bird about two days ago, and even so the leader was fine for another day or two if needed. However, Shellpaw was still very young and growing, and he worried for her health.

~

Orangeice had removed herself from her seat beside Paintedstar, catching the scent of a particular warrior shifting and emanating through the air from the largest den that held the nest of their collapsed clanmates. Poking her small head in, the orange gaze of the medicine cat blinked in the darkness and focused on the she-warrior. "Briarnight....please come with me, won't you?" She turned and headed towards her den without await a reply from the younger cat. After all, Orangeice had been watching the she-cat carefully for the past moon and she was sure of a few things which she needed to bring up to Briarnight.

Briarnight looked up from the small mouse she had been about to eat and sighed. Standing, she padded towards Orangeice, wondering why the medicine cat would want to speak with her. "Yes Orangeice? What is it?" She asked.

"Bring your mouse- you're going to need it." Once in her den, Orangeice began gathering a few herbs from her and there and prepped a prepared nest for her 'patient' to sit in. If she can't tell by now, then she's an imbecile. Flicking her lazy gaze up, she awaited for Briarnight to enter.

Briarnight backtracked quickly and grabbed the mouse, then sat down in the den. "Let me guess. You're are going to tell me something that may shock me if I don't know already? Because I have a hunch as to what it is, but I am just not sure." She said, taking a bite of the mouse.

The scent of fresh-kill wafted through the tunnels, stirring Zenithsky to full consciousness as his belly roared hungrily. The tabby yawned, then went on to stretch his limbs as he stood up in his nest. He took a moment to smooth his ruffled coat, then stare at his shrinking stomach with a faint sigh. The tom was thin as it was and every cat was suffering from the food shortage and he was grateful for his new life in the clan and all, but he did yearn for more than one piece of prey every 3 sunrises.

The Shineclan warrior proceeded to exit the den, then stopped just as Softfrost padded in. "Hello, Softfrost. How are you today?" the tom asked, dipping his head politely in greeting. His mint green eyes rose up to meet the deputy's blue ones- he still wasn't used to the she-cat being as tall as she was.

Oakclaw arched his back in a stretch before slipping around Softfrost and Zenithsky, trotting out into the large cave of their camp. The pale Bengal tom nearly ran into Stonestreak as he walked out, his senses not awake yet, and therefore not making up for the blindness in his left eye. "Oops, sorry," he apologized, sitting next to the tom. Oakclaw was a thin and slender cat to begin with, so a few more bones showing through his thin coat didn't make much of a difference. But Stonestreak was a large tom - at least, thick-boned. His long fur hung from his bony shoulders, making him look far more emaciated than he was.

"Any patrols headed out yet?" Oakclaw asked, yawning. Stonestreak shrugged. "I'm not sure. But I did try and go catch something earlier." He shook his head. "No luck in getting anything."

"I'm alright." Shellpaw mewed out in her high pitched voice. "Softfrost let me have a little lizard last night before I went to sleep." The young she cat explained. Getting prey was tough for the clan now. If Shellpaw was lucky, she caught something once every few days. "How does Sunwatcher always bring in prey?" The tiny apprentie asked quietly.

Moonclaw saw the leader begining to talk to one of the apprentices so he stood up and said "I'm going to go out hunting- See if i can get anything for the clan. See you later". He didn't have too much hope though as he wasn't the best hunter. He was more of a fighter and a mentor than anything.

"Mind if I come along?" Stonestreak spoke up, upon hearing Moonclaw's words. The black, white, and gray tom trotted up to his fellow clanmate after a quick farewell to Oakclaw. "I'd like to see if anymore prey has come out yet - it's warmed up a little bit since this morning so some of the critters might be sneaking out for food now." He hoped he would have better luck than this morning. Coming back empty-pawed made him feel disappointed.

Oakclaw watched as his companion padded off. He was tempted to join the two toms but he decided not to ruin their chances with his blind eye. While it didn't give him too much trouble when he was hunting - most of the time - he knew prey was scarce and he wasn't going to risk anything. Perhaps I'll go hunt on my own later, he mused, the tail tip of his pale gold-tan tail twitching.

Silverfang woke up and opened up his good eye, even though it has been a little while since the fight, he still had to have some support on his front right leg. He got up and cringed a little as he fixed his leg up and slowly limped out of the warriors den. He could barely pick up anything with his ears now then opened his good eye and looked around.

Moonclaw nodded with a small smile. "I was out last night seeing if i could get any prey that doesn't sleep in the night. I didn't have much luck though". He fell into step with the other tom. "Hopefully this should work better" He ducked out of the entrance and pricked his ears to listen for any prey.

"Hopefully," Stonestreak agreed, trotting alongside Moonclaw as they exited the camp. He tasted the air carefully, hoping there was at least a small trace of a scent. When his efforts turned up with no results, he held back a disappointed sigh. His deep amber eyes turned to Moonclaw, hoping the warrior had detected some noise. It's not even Leaf-bare, yet we're all starving. Half of us will be dead before the first snowstorms hit, Stonestreak thought grimly. If only relations between the clans were in better condition.

Monclaw flicked his ears, concentrating on the tiny sounds he could hear a bit over in the distance. "I think there might be a mouse nest somewhere over there- I can hear them scrabbling but i can't smell them" He mewed thoughtfully, glancing at the other warrior for his opinion before sniffing to try and get the scent of them to confirm in. He quietly took a few steps forewards to try and get closer to the sound without disturbing them- If there was any.

Briarnight continued to look at Orangeice, sighing.  "What did you want to tell me again?"  She asked.  She was getting tired of waiting. She looked around the medicine den. Hey Briarnight... What if it is... That. No way, it definitely cannot. There are no signs. Yet, at least.

Twitching one of her folded ears, the cool-natured medicine cat rose a brow threateningly as she took in the she-cat's response. With a fluid tone and a hint of an icy edge, she meowed curtly,"Well, if you are so wise to believe you know more about yourself than I do, then why didn't you make me aware sooner?" Her small ears then flatted completely and a scowl scrawled onto her rounded face. "Briarnight, your warrior duties are suspended until further notice. If you are so bright as to understand why, then move along and I can go about my business." At that, Orangeice stood up and turned her back to the former warrior, readying herself for the organization of her stocks.

Paintedstar smiled at Shellpaw as best as he could, his head turned at an odd angle to see her as the apprentice was perched on his head and upper back. "Yes. Such is because he goes above ground and close to the Terraclan border to hunt. Birds are always there, using the dust on the dry ground to clean and mask themselves. I was once quite the hunter or birds, since my legs were so useful, thus is why I know."

Softfrost blinked lazily as she gazed up at the young warrior from where she laid in her nest. "Ehh?" she grumbled tiredly with a yawn, her brindle and white fur messy and expression a bit sour from being woken up once more. With a twitching tail, she snorted,"Hey Zenithsky, mind grabbing me something small from the fresh kill pile? I'll share with ya- I just haven't eaten since the beginning of the week." She seemed to have completely missed his words prior and she rolled over in her nest, her ribs showing slightly through her heavy coat as she sprawled lazily out.

See, I told you! You are expecting kits! Briarnight took a deep breath. "I'm expecting kits, aren't I? Well, I guess I should go tell Silverfang." The young warrior said before standing. She left the den, mouse un-eaten, and tried to find her mate.

"Oh... Why doesn't everyone go after birds. Then we all can eat." Shellpaw asked curiously, trying to find a solution to the lack of food.

This time Sunwatcher had piped up. "Not everyone knows how. I was taught in my apprenticing. Being above ground is far different than being below like this." In all reality, Sunwatcher thrived above the ground. He was far better at hunting the prey that was in the sun.

"Then let's try and find them. They might be underground - therefore, we can't scent them but we can hear them," Stonestreak said, trotting with light paws after Moonclaw. "If there's even a hint of prey on our territory, we've got to follow it," he whispered quietly. "Shineclan needs as many pieces of prey as it can get." The tom sighed, watching his brewath billow in a faint cloud.

Moonclaw nodded, following his ears to the source of the sound. "Should be nice to have some prey soon. It's been ages since i've had a full belly" He stopped, raising his tail. He could hear them now- The soft squeaks as they moved around in their hidden nest. "Once we break in to the nest we're going to have to be quick so that we can get all of them without scaring any prey that's near by away"

Silverfang was sitting right outside of the warriors den. He stretched and yawned. He saw Briarnight and limped over to her. "Hey Briar, how are you doing this morning?"
